OUR ANNUAL WESTIE HOLIDAY PARTY
|
December 9, 2006 - Many thanks to Mary and Jim Cross for hosting our club's
annual holiday party. It was a wonderful celebration with an enormous amount of food and fun. The gift exchange game
included the usual amount of wrestling among members for a few very special items, one of which was a delightful
Westie painting by local artist Shirley Schreiner (mother of club member Kay McGuire). Mary
and Jim Cross had their home beautifully decorated with multiple Christmas trees and other seasonal touches. One
of the trees, pictured below, was filled solely with Westie ornaments. Click on the photo below to see other highlights
from the holiday party.

January 16, 2007 - Unfortunately, we had to cancel our January meeting due to poor weather conditions.
We are grateful to Helene and Chris Wood, and to Kitty Borah, for making the preparations to host our meeting. We also
want to express our thanks to Mary Brooks and Kay McGuire, DVM, who had prepared a presentation on the Westie Foundation of America, Inc. (WFA). Below is a brief overview
of the WFA as well as a summary of some of the important research projects being funded by the WFA.
The WFA is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide financial aid and
other support for medical research to benefit the health and quality of life of West Highland White Terriers, and to develop
and communicate information regarding the health, care, breeding, and quality of life of Westies to Westie owners, Westie
breeders, and veterinarians. The WFA funds research projects that focus on preventing
diseases through genetic testing, and controlling/curing diseases through improved medication and treatments.
The WHWTCA Health Committee is one of the beneficiaries of the WFA's
fund-raising efforts. As an example, the WFA funded the printing and distribution costs of the 1999 Westie Health Survey,
which was initiated and primarily developed by the WHWTCA Health Committee. The
WHWTCA Health Committee also provides input to help the WFA establish research priorities.
Some of the WFA's current, ongoing research projects include Atopic Dermatitis, Addison's
Disease, Congenital Cataracts, and Bladder Cancer. Westie DNA samples are needed
for each of these ongoing projects. In addition to helping the WFA by providing
DNA samples where applicable, you may also help in the form of financial support to the WFA and its various research efforts
by making donations or by going shopping! For more information, and to learn
