OUR ANNUAL WESTIE HOLIDAY PARTY
AnimatedChampagneBalloonsConfettiMEWH.gif
December 9, 2007 - Lee and Linda Wible, who hosted our annual holiday party, extended a warm, festive welcome to club members and guests.  Beautifully decorated for the holidays, the Wibles' home was filled with the spirit of Christmas.  It was the perfect setting for celebrating  . . . Westie wreaths, garland, beautifully-decorated trees, nutcracker soldiers . . . lavish Christmas decorations at every turn.  The Wibles prepared a holiday feast, and everyone who attended added to the vast array of side dishes and assorted baked items, so we all enjoyed one taste sensation after another.  Following dinner, many of us tried to knock off a few calories with a spirited Westie gift exchange game featuring many new items.  Click on the photo below to see a few snapshots from the holiday party.

A WORD ABOUT RESCUE
January 15, 2008 - Genie Landon and Toby Samo hosted the first meeting of the New Year in their beautiful home along with the help of co-host Deborah Rappaport.  Genie's Westies, Iszie and Lola, helped make everyone feel right at home.  Our club's rescue chair, Jennifer Garrison, gave a presentation on the club's rescue program, which runs solely on donated funds.  Jennifer has devoted a tremendous amount of time to all aspects of rescue, from handling inquiries and applications, to transportation of rescues, to acting as a foster home, and coordinating with fellow club member Dr. Kay McGuire, our designated rescue veterinarian.

Most of our rescues are surrendered by their owners, and the primary reasons are (1) because the owner no longer has the time or money to take care of their Westie, (2) the owner's health is failing, or (3) the dog has health issues or aggression issues.  In 2007, Jennifer handled the rescue and placement of six Westies.  In addition to Texas rescues, Jennifer has been involved in the rescue of Westies from Louisiana and Mississippi.  Following any needed veterinary care, Jennifer looks for that perfect forever home.  By fostering the dogs herself, Jennifer gets a good idea of the dog's personality and temperament, which helps in determining the right fit.

The adoption procedure starts with a two-page application, which Jennifer usually follows with a telephone interview.  In addition, Jennifer always makes a home visit before placing a rescue.  Most of our applicants find us through word of mouth and websites.  The best applicants tend to be those who have previously owned a Westie, have a fenced-in yard, no children, and lots of time to devote to a new member of the household.  After Jennifer places a rescued Westie in a new home, she will call periodically to check on family integration.  The dog is with its new family for a one-week trial basis before final paperwork is signed.  Jennifer has contributed a great deal of her time to the club's rescue program.  She finds it very rewarding when each rescue story has a happy ending.  Click on the photo link below to visit the Rescue page on this website and/or contact Jennifer at rescue@westieclubhouston.com.  Thank you, Jennifer, for a job well done!
